Almost every European vehicle built in the last decade watches the road as you drive. Cameras behind the windscreen, radar units in the bumpers and ultrasonic sensors in the panels feed the systems you rely on without thinking about them — autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring. What most owners don't realise is how precisely those components have to be aimed, and how easily a collision repair can disturb them.

What ADAS Actually Is

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — the umbrella term for the cameras, radar and sensors that let your car interpret what is around it. On modern Jaguar, Land Rover, BMW and Mini models these are no longer optional extras; they are standard equipment, and they form part of the vehicle's safety case. The forward-facing camera generally sits behind the windscreen near the rear-view mirror. Radar units are commonly mounted behind the front bumper or grille. Ultrasonic parking sensors sit in the bumper skin itself, with further cameras built into the mirrors and tailgate.

Why a Repair Can Put Them Out

These components are aimed to tolerances measured in fractions of a degree. Replace a windscreen and the forward camera moves with it. Repair or replace a front bumper and the radar behind it is disturbed. Even work that seems unrelated can matter — a wheel alignment changes the vehicle's thrust line, which the forward camera uses as its reference, and panel work near a sensor mounting point can shift its aim. The margins are unforgiving: a misalignment of a single degree puts a forward-facing camera's aim out by more than a metre and a half at a hundred metres.

The Problem You Cannot See

This is what makes recalibration so easy to overlook. An uncalibrated system does not switch itself off, and in most cases it will not put a warning on the dash. The car looks perfect, drives normally, and gives the driver no reason to suspect anything is wrong. But the system carries on working from a false picture of the road — automatic braking that reacts late or triggers for nothing, lane-keep assist steering towards a lane edge that is not where it believes it to be, adaptive cruise misjudging the gap to the vehicle ahead. The safety net is still there in name. It is simply no longer telling the truth.

Static and Dynamic Calibration

Recalibration takes two forms. Static calibration is carried out in the workshop, with the vehicle positioned on level ground and manufacturer-specified targets set at precise distances and heights in front of it. Dynamic calibration requires the vehicle to be driven at set speeds under set conditions so the system can relearn what it is seeing. Many vehicles need both, and the exact procedure differs by manufacturer and by model — which is why this work follows the manufacturer's documented repair procedure rather than a generic approach.

What to Ask Your Repairer

If your vehicle is going in for collision repair, three questions are worth asking. Will you check whether my vehicle requires recalibration? Will it be carried out to the manufacturer's specified procedure? And will I receive documentation confirming it was completed? A repairer who works on modern European vehicles every day should be able to answer all three without hesitation.
